UNESCO World Heritage Sites

Mauritius has two entries on the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Aapravasi Ghat
is the site of the immigration depot where thousands of people, primarily from British India came to Mauritius as indentured workers, under "The Great Experiment", designed to replace slave labour after the abolition of slavery.  Slavery was abolished in Mauritius on the 1st February 1835 and between the 1830s and 1910, close to half a million people signed contracts to work in Mauritius and subsequently, other British colonies which had previously employed slave labour.

The second entry on the list is Le Morne.  Le Morne is a mountain, jutting out into the Indian Ocean at the South-West tip of Mauritius and became home to escaped slaves
