Martello Towers

Martello Tower (La Preneuse) Martello Tower (Tower 3) Martello Tower (Tower 5)

The British built five Martello Towers in Mauritius with only three towers remaining.  The largest tower known as Cunningham Tower, was constructed within the confines of Fort George and with three guns mounted, was designed to defend Fort George during its construction.  This tower was believed to have been demolished during the 1920s.

A second fort was constructed within Fort Victoria, a short distant south of Port-Louis to protect the north bank of the Grand River North West estuary.  It is not known when this tower was removed.

Of the three remaining towers, one is sited to defend the south bank of the Grand River North West estuary and you can see the remnants of a white navigation stripe and is mounted with a red light, both designed to aid navigation into Port-Louis harbour, one is found at La Preneuse and has been turned into a museum whilst the third can be found at Harmony Point.
